Common signs of concussion of an athlete

A mild concussion may involve no loss of consciousness (feeling “dazed”) or a very brief loss of consciousness (being “knocked out”). Common signs of concussion of an athlete who has sustained a concussion can involve cognitive and behavioral abnormalities such as memory loss, vomiting or nausea, headaches, blurred vision and sensitivity to light, slurred speech, difficulty concentrating or fatigue. Teachers should also understand that your child may be more tired, withdrawn, easily upset, or confused.
History and physical examination are crucial to making the diagnosis of concussion. According to the CDC, as many as 3.8 million sports- and recreation-related concussions occur each year in the U.S. It is also recommended that anyone who is drunk or high on recreational drugs is taken to A&E if they have a head injury resulting in concussion.
